Have you ever had a serious yet non-fatal medical issue that required quick attention? Perhaps you went to an emergency room to help solve the problem. But there may be a better option in those kinds of situations. An example of this kind of medical situation may be the flu, which can typically affect as much as 20% of the U.S. population annually.

An urgent care facility–and in some cases a 24 hour urgent care center–may be preferable. These facilities are designed to address medical issues that come up unexpectedly, though more and more immediate care centers also offer x-rays, regular physicals, and even lab work. Depending on where you live, you may be able to find urgent care centers that can administer prescriptions while you are at the location.

But what makes an urgent care facility particularly advantageous? The Urgent Care Association of America found in a survey that 57% of urgent care patients wait no more than 15 minutes to receive care, and that 80% of urgent care situations are resolved within an hour. Additionally, 66% of urgent care facilities employ doctors, assistants and, nurses. There is at least one doctor present at any given time at 65% of the locations.
