The terms are often used interchangeably, but ceramics generally refers to the process of forming objects out of clay that is heated and then cooled. Pottery is usually defined as a finished product such as a dish, or a vase, or some other type of vessel. In simplified terms, the pottery is, basically, the finished ceramic items.
In pottery making, clay is heated in a type of oven called a kiln. Olympic kilns, pottery wheels and other supplies are available for purchase, but it is more common for people to attend ceramics and pottery making classes in a shop or a studio. Attending classes allows students access to both assistance from experts and to a wide range of high quality pottery making supplies and equipment.
Pottery glazes, pottery tools and supplies, and especially large items like pottery wheels and Olympic kilns take up a lot of room, and can be costly. However, for those who have a strong passion for pottery making, or who are going into the pottery making business, there are many different types of pottery supplies available to rent or to purchase.
